Fading Light. “Bewitching hour, when the daylight gets less intense, shadows become longer and usually any wind starts to lay as darkness creeps across the landscape. As the sun descends toward the horizon a shift in colors of any clouds occurs, increasing in warmth and intensity, adding to the light show that last until close to an hour after setting. Audible sounds change, like a change in crews from day shift to night shift, with some turning in and others awakening to start their routine in a continuing life struggle, so goes life in the wilderness…”

Turkey vultures frequent the gorge, riding the warm air currents rising from the cliffs. Identify them by their large size, the narrow tail, the white/gray underside of the flight feathers, and if they’re close enough their red head. (Photo: Nicholas Massey)

… Even at a distance, you may be able to identify them by the slight upturn of their wing tips. In this photo, the tip of the wing at left (bird’s right) is seen to bend up slightly. This little detail is more useful than you might think for identification. (Photo: Nicholas Massey)
